6 TIPS FOR SUMMER GOLF TOURNAMENT PREPARATION

6 TIPS FOR SUMMER GOLF TOURNAMENT PREPARATION

Keeping golf greens in tip top condition through a busy schedule of summer competitions is a tough challenge!  Maintaining speed and smoothness during hot weather requires a delicate balance between achieving optimal playing conditions and preserving turf health. Here are some key steps to ensure your greens are tournament-ready without stressing the turf.

1. Micro-Grooming

The new Thatch-Away Micro-Groomers are in a league of their own for refining the texture and speed of your greens, without excessively lowering your height of cut.  Their finely spaced tungsten tipped blades thin out coarser grasses and promote upright growth. Regular micro-grooming helps maintain ball roll consistency and reduces thatch buildup.  They promote smoother and faster greens, without stressing the turf.

2. Optimal Water Management

Irrigate deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth, which is essential during hot weather. Early morning watering reduces evaporation and ensures the turf has adequate moisture throughout the day.

3. Mowing Height

Gradually lower the height of cut (HOC) in the weeks leading up to the tournament to avoid sudden stress. Keep blades sharp to ensure a clean cut and prevent damage to the grass leaf.

4. Nutrient Management

Apply light, balanced fertilization to ensure the turf has the necessary nutrients to withstand the stress of the tournament. Avoid heavy applications that could lead to excessive growth and increased mowing frequency.

5. Rolling

Implement rolling to enhance green speed and smoothness. Rolling can be alternated with mowing to reduce mechanical stress on the turf.

6. Surface Aeration

Keep the turf surface open by micro tining or sarel rolling to improve air exchange and root health. This is particularly important in hot weather to ensure the roots receive sufficient oxygen.

These are some of the fundamental steps for maintaining competition-ready greens that are both fast and smooth, without compromising the health of your turf.
